Welcome to Sanctuary City, a home to thriving humans, plump animals and bountiful fields. We, the creators of this Sanctuary, invite you to meander along our roads, take a dip in the forest pond or frolic with our neighbourhood animals. The smell of home cooked meals is carried through town on the lazy ocean breeze. The song of a boiling kettle reminds you to slow down and stay for a cuppa on the porch. In the afternoons, we dance in our central park to the music of our neighbours before wandering to the vegetable field to harvest for our dinner time feast.

This installation is the creation and collaboration between a class of North Lake Senior Campus IEC (Intensive English Centre) students, and local artist Shupiwe Chongwe. In planning this project, students were asked to question what sanctuary means to them. The students, at various stages of learning English and from many different countries all over the world, first had to discuss the definition of sanctuary itself. Below are some excerpts of the written component of this process, words that shaped us in creating Sanctuary City, a place where all can feel safe and protected.
