Join Nyoongar artist Sharyn Egan for a hands-on workshop exploring the themes of Everything Under the Sun. With shared stories and conversation, participants will create their own woven grass sculptures to take home.

Wed 19 Nov, 6pm: Backstories #1: Selena de Carvalho (Lutruwita / Tasmania) with Grant Revell.

A critical yarn into the practices of Fremantle Biennale Sanctuary Residency artist Selena de Carvalho, in conversation with local writer and critic Grant Revell. Together they’ll reflect on their roles as artists, advocates and activists in Backstories—a provocative discussion for artists and audiences imagining more just, relational and place-grounded futures.

Sat 29 Nov, 11am: Plant Talk with Garden Curator Richard McDowell. Hosted by Annika Kristensen | REGISTER HERE

Join native plant expert and garden curator Richard McDowell in conversation with curator Annika Kristensen. Together, they’ll dig into the Everything Under the Sun garden — discussing endemic species, seasonal cycles, and what we can learn from plants.


Sat 22 Nov, 11am – 12.30pm: Panel Talk with Raki Nikahetiya, Monisha Ahmed and Ranjit Hoskote

Join Monisha and Raki from sā Ladakh Biennale, Asia’s highest land art Biennale, in conversation with poet and cultural theorist Ranjit Hoskote (Sanctuary Residency) as they discuss place-responsive art, climate, culture and community. Together they explore how artists and festivals across the Indian Ocean rim can foster transboundary dialogues, shared knowledge and new forms of cultural connection.

Step into the Biennale with our walking tours. Explore key artworks and hear from our artists on the process behind each project. Stay on afterwards for Manjaree Music – Banjo Lucia.  

WEEK 3 

Thurs 27 Nov, 6pm: Poetry Reading + Q&A with Ranjit Hoskote
Corner Room, P&O Hotel | REGISTER HERE 

Poet, cultural theorist, translator and curator Ranjit Hoskote shares an evening of readings and reflections. Author of more than 30 books, including eight collections of poetry, Hoskote has also curated over 40 exhibitions worldwide, from India’s first national pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2011) to the 7th Gwangju Biennale (2008). In this special event hosted by Robert Woods – Centre for Stories, audiences are invited into a conversation on poetry, translation, culture and sanctuary.  

Sat 29 Nov, 11am: Backstories #2: Ruth Langford (Lutruwita / Tasmania) with Grant Revell

MANJAREE PRECINCT:

This event takes place outdoors at the Manjaree Precinct, next to the J Shed at Bathers Beach, Fremantle.

For live performances or talks, we recommend arriving at least 10 minutes before advertised start times to secure a good position.

Food will be served from The Community Kitchen on select nights on a first-come, first-served basis. Visit the Event Page for more information on our lineup of food vendors.

In the event of inclement weather the show may be delayed or cancelled. Please follow Fremantle Biennale on social media for up to date information.

The Manjaree Precinct includes outdoor seating area, toilets and a rest area. Please dress for the weather with warm clothing for evenings.

P&O HOTEL:

Events at the P&O Hotel are held indoors and undercover.

Food & Drink: Free drinking water, as well as a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at the bar. Food will also be available to purchase from the Ode to Sirens kitchen. 

Public Transport: Bathers Beach is a 10-minute walk from Fremantle Train Station, the final stop on the Fremantle line. Several CAT and local bus routes also stop nearby.

P&O HOTEL:

The P&O Building is located at the Corner of High and Mouat St, Fremantle. 

Parking: Street parking can be found surrounding the building. Additionally parking is available at the Roundhouse Car Park.

Public Transport: The P&O is a 6 minute walk from the Fremantle Train Station, which is the final destination for the Fremantle Train line, as well as several bus routes.

MANJAREE PRECINCT

The event area is wheelchair accessible with a footpath running through the Precinct. The event area also features grass and some uneven terrain with limestone gravel.

The stage will be set up on the grass area, with accessible viewing available on the footpath.

Accessible portable toilets will be available on site behind the J Shed and at Arthur Head Public Toilets and Esplanade Park Public Toilets. The nearest ACROD parking can be located South Mole Lighthouse Car Park or Arthur Head Reserve Car Park.

P&O HOTEL:


The Corner Room and Ode to Sirens at the P&O Hotel is located on the ground floor. The groundfloor areas are wheelchair accessible. The event spaces feature hard floors, some carpet.

Accessible toilets are available at both Ode to Sirens and within the P&O Building.

ACROD Parking is available along High Street, Fremantle at the Roundhouse Car Park.
